At the far end of the village of Krushuna in a fairy tale woodland setting cascades a series of enchanting waterfalls.
The Krushuna waterfalls reputed to be the highest in Bulgaria are also known as the Maarta waterfalls, which is the name of the river which flows through this area.
Some of the falls are as high as 20m along the gorge and there are several eco paths you can choose to walk on.
Travertine water Effects
As you walk along the path which winds its way up the gorge you will notice the beautiful turquoise coloured water. This is due to the dissolved travertine.
Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by hot springs. You will cross over several wooden bridges on your walk along the meandering path and see several cascades all in their natural beauty. You will find plenty of wonderful photo opportunities too.
Krushuna takes its name from the Kroshun. A bird of prey like a falcon.
The temperature of the Maarta river can be about 52 degrees.
It’s believed to have many healing properties for, skin problems and rheumatic conditions.
For centuries locals have believed in the healing powers of the warm Maantra spring water. On the feast day of St George, people will climb the path to where the river springs.
Here is found a natural opening only big enough for a person to crawl into. The local people would crawl through this small aperture three times. After they will wash their eyes with droplets of water from the rocks while repeating a mantra.
The Gorge and Cave systems
The gorge has some of the best caves in the Balkans. The region close to Krushuna waterfalls has four caves. Boninskata, Urushka, Gornik and Devetashka. The best and largest of them all is the Devetashka Cave which found further down the valley. Devetashka Cave has the largest entrance in Europe. In the 13th and 14th centuries, many Christian Hermits practiced a mystical tradition called Hesychasm. High up in the rocks along one of the paths you will see evidence of their dwellings. Carved into the rocks on one such cave looks like it has been a church. Some locals say it was once part of a larger medieval monastery. You can also see etchings painted on some the walls.
Hesychasm is founded on humbleness, love and wisdom. The Hesychasts lived in remote, secluded places, where they could contemplate nature and connect with God. They used to heal peoples’ diseases. One of their beliefs was that mankind could be freed from its ailments and even live forever.
